Imagine you’re cruising along on your bike, enjoying the peacefulness of your surroundings, when an unwelcome noise ruins the moment. It could be a persistent rattle, ominous creak, or annoying squeak. It likely means something’s wrong, and you have to fix it immediately. Otherwise, you’ll be dealing with costly repairs, or worse, you’ll be in serious danger on the trails. We’ve compiled this guide to diagnosing and fixing the most common bike noises for your convenience.

Squeaking and Creaking Noise

Squeaks and creaks usually happen when parts of your bike rub against each other when they shouldn’t. Remove the pedals, add grease, and check the washers if the pedals are squeaky. A wax-based lube works wonders for squeaky cleats. If you keep hearing a noise, it might be because the big gear wheels near the pedals are loose. Tighten some screws or put Loctite on them to hold them in place.

Creaking often means some moving parts are getting old and tired. To determine where the noise comes from, stand next to your bike, hold the brakes, and push down on the pedals. The noise could be from the bottom bracket, headset, hubs, or pivot points. If it’s the seat post, take it off to clean it and add grease, then reinstall it. Use a special grip paste instead of grease on a carbon frame. If the frame is still creaking, there could be a small crack somewhere or a bigger problem that needs expert attention.

Rattling and Clicking Noise

Rattles and clicks are other noises you might hear while biking. A rattle from the front often points to a loose headset. Tighten it, but be careful not to overdo it. If the chain is chatty, it might need to be cleaned and oiled or adjusted where it meets the gears. Or you’re traveling with an old chain, and it’s time for a new one. Any loose screws will rattle, so you should gently tighten them every once in a while. If you hear clicking when you change gears, the cables are probably stretched out, and you must adjust or replace them.
