The best thing about mountain biking is finding new places to ride. You know all the hot spots in Arizona, but what about Nevada? We’re so close to the Silver State with plenty of land to explore on two wheels. Here are some of the most popular trails just across the border.

Amargosa Trail in Henderson

It’s a 10-mile-long trek with paved and unpaved sections just south of Las Vegas. There are several places to start, like St. Rose Parkway Trail, right across from the St. Rose Dominican Hospitals Siena Campus. Head north and meet the Cactus Wren Trail at Eastern Avenue. Follow the road east and you’ll get to Henderson Multigenerational Center – one of the largest recreation facilities in Nevada. The trail continues on from there with plenty of educational kiosks, signage, and wildlife.

Anthem East Trail in Henderson

This trail runs along the McCullough Range, from Anthem Hills Park to neighborhoods off Shadow Canyon Drive. Park at Anthem Hills Park and start there. The first 3/4 of a mile is paved. The rest is dirt with some fun and challenging ascents. You’ll see stunning views of Las Vegas and the surrounding desert.

Historic Railroad Trail in Boulder City

For a shorter ride, check out this 3.7-mile-long trail 30 miles from Las Vegas. It’s only recommended for experienced cyclists. Start your journey at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Alan Bible Visitor Center trailhead. You’ll snake through five railroad tunnels as you head towards Hoover Dam. The first part is easy and wide through volcanic rock. Then you’ll find yourself several hundred feet above the water. There’s no guardrail, so be extremely careful.

River Mountains Loop Trail

Everyone can enjoy the 35-mile long loop trail around the River Mountains. It’s 12 feet wide and paved, so it’s great for all experience levels. There are two main access points in Henderson – the Railroad Pass Hotel and Casino and the Equestrian Park. And two in Boulder City – the Lake Mead NRA Alan Bible Visitor Center and the Equestrian Park. The route connects to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the Hoover Dam, and Boulder City. You’ll hit the Lake Mead Parkway Trail, Burkholder Trail, Equestrian North Trail, and Equestrian South Trail along the way.

Historic Virginia and Truckee Trail in Carson City

This is an even shorter adventure, just under 2 miles long, formerly known as the Carson City Trail. Start at a gravel pull-out on Nye Road and Murphy Road. You’ll follow part of the old route of the former Virginia and Truckee Railroad, between Kings Canyon Road and Combs Canyon Road, and through subdivisions. All along the western edge of Western Nevada Community College.
