For cyclists, braving the elements is part of the thrill of the ride. You can absolutely venture out into the rain. As long as you have waterproof gear to keep you clean and dry. But in order for this gear to maintain its effectiveness, you have to properly clean and maintain it. Even one misstep can ruin the waterproof technology.
Prep it for washing.
Use a damp cloth or soft-bristled brush to remove any stuck dirt, mud, and debris. Get into all zippers, velcro closures, and seams. Close all zippers and pockets and turn the items inside out. This protects the outer surfaces and prevents excess wear and tear during the washing cycle.
Consider hand washing.
Hand washing is actually better for most waterproof cycling gear. Fill a sink or bucket with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent. Submerge your gear and gently move it around to remove dirt and stains. Rinse it with clean water to remove lingering dirt and detergent.
Or use a washing machine.
Some gear is machine washable. Check the tags and always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for washing and drying. Use a front-load machine on gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent.
Avoid harsh chemicals.
Never use harsh chemicals, bleach, or fabric softeners on waterproof gear. They can damage the waterproof coatings and membranes. Making them ineffective over time.
Hang it up to dry.
Proper drying is also crucial to maintain the waterproofing properties. Hang it up in a well-ventilated area, away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Never dry it, as the heat will damage the fabric and waterproof coatings.
Store it properly.
Keep your gear in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Don’t crumple it up or fold it into a drawer. This can make it crease and wrinkle, which can affect its performance.
