The Shimano EP8 and EP801 are two generations of high-end e-bike motors. Launched in 2020 and 2023, they both deliver 2050W of nominal power and 85Nm of torque in a small six-pound package. But the EP801 offers even more for better performance and acceleration, as well as handling and efficiency. Spoiler alert! Everything tells us the Shimano EP801 is a significant upgrade from the previous generation, EP8.

Power and Control (Shimano EP801 Wins!)

Both the EP8 and the EP801 deliver 85Nm of maximum torque—plenty for you to handle steep climbs and technical trails like a champ. However, as far as peak power goes, the EP8 kicks out 500 watts while the EP801 promises 600 watts.

Weight and Design (Shimano Tie)

The motors are almost identical in weight at 2.7kg and 2.6kg, or just under six pounds. Compare this to the Bosch SX, which comes in at around 4.5 lbs. As for design, you’re not going to see many changes visibly. They’re nearly identical in their compact, sleek appearance.
