Did you know you can register your bike using its serial number? Then law enforcement can track it down if it’s ever lost or stolen. The registry is free and accessible through your local police department. Also, through Project 529, a worldwide service dedicated to bike recovery. Here’s what to know to protect your ride.

Find Your Bike’s Serial Number

Every bike has a unique ID number, usually 7-10 digits long, stamped on the frame. You can usually find it near the bottom bracket, the handlebars, the back wheel, or the seat. Once you find it, you can register your ride.

Register Your Bike with the Local Police

First, sign up with your local police department. Many departments have a free online bike registration form. You’ll have to share details about your bike, like the serial number, brand, model, color, wheel size(s), and unique features. The more information you put in the file, the easier it is for the police to identify it.

Register Your Bike with Project 529

Be even more protected by joining Project 529. It’s a neighborhood bike watch that works with police departments, colleges, clubs, and stores worldwide. You share the same info you gave to the police, plus some pictures of your bike. Project 529 can also be used to list a bike you found, list one for sale, or buy one.
